[it's smokier here, dangerously so. donatello had already known from comparing leo's photo to the vague map of the territory he has in his head that it was downwind from the fires and thus more likely to be inundated with flames and fumes. he'd snagged a breathing apparatus from a fire truck, not feeling the least bit sorry about it as he shoved it into his backpack and started for leo's location.
by the time he makes it there he has had to strap it on, holding the mask to his face to suck up clean oxygen-nitrogen mix instead of whatever poisons are floating around in the air (carbon monoxide, methane, particulates blown out from the burning detritus). he doesn't bother shouting for his brother, the clamor of panic making it pointless, and resolves to get the damn trackers working so he never has to worry about this ever again.
hopefully leo had the sense to stay put. hopefully he's not moving around, possibly injured, sucking in this horrible air and burning his larynx to a crisp.]
