Myself and my employer wish to provide a safe space for troubled mutants still coming into their powers. A chance to grow into themselves and be safe from the outside world. I myself remember being your age, my own powers being out of control enough to hurt others.
[Peter's brows knit together, one thing sticking out fairly immediately.] Your employer?
Mr. Essex acts as a benefactor to help fund this facility. It is in a remote space to be sure of everyone's safety.
[Peter pauses his reach for his costume to look at her.] Where are we?
[Injuries on hold, sword hilt forgotten for the moment. The idea they're in Massachusetts boggles Leon. There's no way, there just is no way, there'snoway.
He keeps the hilt firmly in his grip and steps back toward Peter but he can't help the shaking - either the pain or the shock setting in to the whole situation, he couldn't say.]
[Peter reels back at the reveal they're not even in New York.] Massachusetts?!
[Leo moving back towards him is enough to help Peter shift back to something defensive, gently reaching out to his friend to pull them both back out into the hallway. The fact Leo is shaking just makes Peter more worried.
Dr. Reyes sighs a little, barely having a reaction beyond patience.]
[The barely kept anger Leo's struggling with that's keeping him on his feet even gets a firm direction with that.]
No. You stole us from our home, are lying to us about how we got here and what happened, broke our things if they even really are our things, and keep sidestepping why we can't leave.
[He'll back up into Peter's hand, sticking close by now, taking two seconds to glance at his own bloody footsteps on the floor from where he was standing and backtracked.]
[The woman shakes her head slightly, a clear disappointment crisp in her tone.]
You're both in shock, and the full story would not aid you right at this moment. When you are both calmer, I would be happy to speak with you about everything.
We're leaving. [Peter cringes when he sees the bloody footprints, on the verge of just scooping Leo up again as he pulls him out of the room into the hall.
[It happens quickly enough Peter doesn't have time to react. One moment he's with Leo, the next he's been yanked backward somewhat.
He is encased in a glowing bubble. He slips across its smooth surface, falling onti his backside.
He startles, realizing another one seemingly manifested around Leo as well.
His own bubble is pulled away from Leo's as Reyes begins walking the turtle back the way they came.]
I don't like having to do this, but it is for the best.
Leo! [Peter jolts forward against the forcefield, hitting it hard enough he hurts himself, but the panic about what is happening to his friend is hard to contain.]
[It's the shift in support that has Leo fall. Peter suddenly pulled from him and a smooth surface underneath his feet throws him off, and he goes feet over head with a shout as his leg twinges and a sharp pain in his side stabs clear through any thoughts he was pulling together.
He looks up and around at the bubble surrounding him, then searches for Peter to find his face and starts trying to shoulder his way through the barrier.]
Peter! [Another slam. It's not doing anything but making his shoulder ache like the rest of him. And then he's being walked away.] Let us go!
[Seeing Leo take that level of tumble just makes Peter's panic worse. Peter manages to stick to the surface of the shield, throwing himself at it with as much force as he can muster to break it.]
You can't just do this! Let us go! Now!
You're both more than a little too emotional at the moment for a proper discussion. [Doctor Reyes says smoothly as she walks down the hall.] When you two are calmer, a more thorough discussion can happen.
[A walk that took the injured teenagers a long time to deal with takes Reyes very little time at all.
She pushes the door open, sighing briefly at the broken door knob. More displeased at best than angry.]
Don't take it very personally if I don't believe you right now, Leonardo. You're aggravating your injuries to an extent I don't think I can put much stock in your judgement yet.
[Leo can likely hear Peter still scrabbling at his own bubble. He's kicking out at the shield, making its surface shimmer from the force alone. Then Reyes leads Leonardo into the infirmary they started in, closing the door behind herself.]
Oh, you've gone well beyond making this personal, lady. I can aggravate a lot more than just my injuries, just let me go.
[He's glaring so hard. But his heart stops for a few seconds when he sees the door click closed behind her, cutting him off from Peter. No no nonononono-]
It all seems confusing now, but it will make sense soon enough. [Is as much reassurance as Reyes gives. With a practiced hand she manages to get Leo situated again. Disarmed, back into his bed and chained back in place with a new set of stronger cuffs. A new shield is dropped back over the bed for assurance he stays in place.
Reyes makes her leave, only reappearing to repair the door and leaving Leo to lay in bed for the remainder of the day, which turns into night. Sometime around the early morning the shield dissipates.
By the time morning comes, if Leo got any sleep at all its disturbed the door handle jiggling roughly. Then snapping clean off again as the door swings open, Peter stepping in. The baggy jeans and jersey has been replaced with a loose hospital gown paired with scrub pants. He looks exhausted, but angry in equal measure.]
[It is such a long time to be stuck in one place. He tried pulling at the handcuffs (now both hands! upgrade, natch) and only hurt his arms and shoulders. He shouted for hours, until he lost his voice, coughing and gasping.
Nothing changed. Nothing happened. Except day passed into night and then to morning. No word from Peter. No sound of his phone going off with what would probably be hundreds of worried messages.
Leo almost doesn't even hear the door jiggling. But he sees the door moving in the corner of his eye and looks, wide eyed and so relieved to see Peter standing there.]
[Peter doesn't hesitate to start towards the bed, very obviously limping now but stubbornly ignoring it. What exposed skin Leo can see of Peter's arm, the array of fresh bruising from his arms to his elbow is a glaring flaw against his pale skin.
He stumbles hard into the bed, wincing openly at the collision but ignoring it to reach out and break the cuff again. It is about the same level of struggle from before; none.
He reaches out a hand to just touch Leo's cheek, just needing assurance his friend is okay. He brings their foreheads together, just trying to center himself somewhat.
Leo looks rough, Peter can guess he's been struggling here for hours.]
We're leaving. Okay-? We're going home.
[He doesn't want to let go of Leo, but he has to. He draws back, away from the bed towards one of the windows. The metal bars blocking them from accessing the glass won't last very long if at all.]
[It's such a weird thing to realize in this moment that this is officially the longest he has ever been away from his family, and even longer with no way to contact. It's eating him up inside a bit, needing some kind of contact but then there's Peter coming in close.
Once the cuffs are gone again, he starts pushing himself up with some shakiness. Only to stop when his skin meets Peter's hand and forehead.]
Home. [Leo sounds like he hasn't talked in ages, his voice scratches and breaks so badly.] Yeah. Let's go home.
[Leo being this quiet and his voice being so unsteady just makes Peter's heart hurt. He hates this situation. He hates it so much.
He channels his frustration into just breaking the bars over the window. The metal creaks and groans audibly before cracking. Each bar bends under Peter's grasp. He breaks off all the bars blocking them.
He just keeps one piece as a rod, using it to break the glass. The shrapnel hits the tiled floor underfoot, and Peter makes a point of cleaning out the edges of the windowpane. Once he's satisfied, he moves back to Leo.]
I'm going to pick you up. [Its a gentle warning, and Peter scoops the turtle up in his arms, keeping him close.]
[Leo sort of wishes Peter had stuck around a few seconds longer, but this is way way more important. By the time Peter's got the bars broken off, Leo finally is up on his feet, rubbing his wrists and trying to limp his way over. His leg is in so much worse condition for his fighting the whole time.
But he watches the glass get cleared out. Nods when Peter says he's picking Leo up, winces as he raises his arms for the scoop, feeling the muscles pull painfully.]
Right, right- we're going. [Peter just cradles Leo close, at this point afraid to let him go. He moves to clamber up onto the windowsill, pushing himself out of the window. One edge of hanging metal bar Peter had broken off catches at his back in passing, tearing a bit of the hospital gown, but Peter doesn't really care or notice beyond a pained intake of breath. It's a shallow but painful wound he can heal over easily enough.
He's just happy they are outside in the chill of the early morning. Peter waits for a second, just letting his eyes adjust to the low lighting before he starts running. His limp makes his gait odd, and a little janky, but he's just ignoring it in favor of staying on task.
Maybe he planned on letting Leo walk at some point, but right now his mind is solely focused on the broken gate further ahead of them. The apparent edge of the property leading into woods.]
[he can't see it, but he can feel when the metal slices through Peter's back. Shallow or not, he wishes it wasn't, but if it means they get out and can get home, then it'll be fine. It has to be fine.
The chill makes him shiver and curl up more against Peter's front not really able to regulate his own heat right now. But it's outside which is better than inside.]
[Peter just keeps moving, trying to focus on the goal of safety. What lay in the woods was a mystery to both of them, but it is better than being held captive.
The closer they get, the clearer it is the gate hasn't been maintained for years. Old metal has rusted over, plant life growing over pieces of it. Peter is trying to override the exhaustion wanting to make him crumple. The new aggravated injury and bruises he's given himself over the course of a day.
They are getting so close to freedom. Safety.]
We can go home, and rest, it'll be okay. We'll be okay.
They gotta be worried. The guys and your aunt, they have to be.
[He can picture the calls and missed texts they both probably have waiting for them. He doesn't know how exactly they'll get back to Manhattan, but that's a problem to figure out once they're away from this place.]
Get some celebratory welcome back pizza and drinks, wind down and recover playing video games and whatever else we feel like doing.
[A weak kind of laugh escapes Peter, the sound is rougher than it normally would be. His voice is decidedly less shot than Leo's but he's done his own amount of yelling from his own cell.
The air was only getting colder the further he ran, making Peter wish he thought to grab a blanket or jacket. Something.]
Won't be surprised if they make both of us go on bed rest. [Peter can heal faster, but May would definitely make him stay off his feet.] So, it'll be a lot of celebratory pizza from bed.
[The air is getting colder and Leonardo's teeth start chattering, just a little. Enough he can feel it in his jaw. He can only generate so much of his own heat, so he leans into Peter a little more to soak up his.
But something catches his eye the closer to the gate they get. Some... blink or flash of something, he didn't catch it.]
Definitely. Just bury us in pillows for a while and let us get waited on.
Seems fair, we were kidnapped for like- way too long. [Peter completely misses the blink, more focused on the other teenager in his arms. Worry about Leo getting too cold occupying his mind.
Enough so as they get close enough to the gate he doesn't really pay his Spider-Sense much mind.
Thus he hits a familiar forcefield with a lot of force, and just bounces back from it.]
[Its more reflexes that keep his fall from being as terrible as it could be on the wet grass.
He grunts at impact, just focused on landing safely without losing Leo in his grasp. The hospital gown clad teenager is trying to make sure he takes as much of the impact as possible.]
