[Peter is decidedly unaware, still just trying to keep Leo close and safe. His spider sense is prickling at her presence.
The woman smiles at them thinly, a professional smile. The expression just makes Peter feel more uncomfortable.
I'm trying to help you boys. A horrible accident befell both of you, and this was the safest place for you. I have your things set aside for the moment.
Accident-? [Peter throws back with a scrunch of his nose.]
[He doesn't know, really, people in movies and comics have short-range amnesia from horrible accidents all the time. People wouldn't just make that up for dramatic stories, would they? No, there'd have to be some real life basis on it even though that's not a specific thread of medical information he's ever had to look into.
No, right now, he's got to bluff.]
Great, well we're awake now and if you'd give us our stuff we can get an ambulance and get Peter to a hospital.
Head injuries can cause jumbled memories, if not loss of memories. I'm just here to make sure you boys are safe.
We'd be safer at home. [Peter says firmly back. He does not like the way she's just walking closer to them, like she's approaching cornered animals. She does stop short, not outright crowding them.] We don't even know who you are.
Ah, my apologies. I am Dr. Reyes. I wish I had better news to tell you, but the accident cost... more than a few lives. Your friends, your brothers, they weren't as fortunate as you.
[Peter can feel how tight Leonardo's muscles go at the mention of his brothers, let alone that they're... gone? He stares at her, wide eyed and disbelieving. How does she know, how does she know, they'd been patrolling and gone off on their own. If someone took them, there's no way anyone would know he even has brothers.
After a second, he starts climbing out of Peter's arms, shakily stumbling onto his feet wanting to look her dead on.]
No. No, that didn't happen. Give me my phone, I'll prove it right now.
Leo... [Peter winces, but shifts enough to support his friend's weight, knowing Leo will likely topple over without it.]
[The woman releases a gentle sigh, her expression grave almost pitying.]
Your phone didn't survive the explosion. Both of you barely did.
You two were stopping weapons smugglers. The alien weaponry has a tendency to explode when triggered in just the right way. The rest of your group arrived at the first explosion to help you two and tried to stop any further chain reactions from going.
[That sounds familiar enough it makes Peter feel sick.] That's- how would- you even know us, or-
I tend to keep my eyes peeled for young mutants. Your group was hard to miss. I try not to approach unless needed.
Great, then you got us out of the way, we're awake now, we need to leave.
[Leo doesn't like this at all. He doesn't like some random human who 'watches out' for young mutants just happened to see them and scoop them up and isolate them.
He still refuses to confirm or deny if he even has brothers, not wanting to give them away if she's bluffing herself right now.]
I don't care who you are. You aren't keeping us here in this horror movie looking hospital.
[Peter looks to Leo, trying to gauge how truthful this woman even is being. He doesn't want to believe a word she's saying, but pieces of his memory are starting to come back.]
It would be for the best you two stay for the time being. You're both injured and only aggravating it by being up. I just want to help.
We're not staying. You're not really helping us.
Given the accident destroyed a building in Queens, it might be for the best you wait to handle the backlash if you must leave.
[She really is just gray-rocking them. He can feel something warm and thick dripping down his leg, just under his knee. The pain is starting to pulse in and Leo determines that is real and he is actually making it worse.
But if it's a choice between that, or trust this weirdo woman, he'll take the leg damage.]
We need to see my suit, and his sword. [Peter just tries to hold up Leo's weight, worried about him enough to not be as focused as he could be on the woman in front of them.
Doctor Reyes nods, surprisingly not pushing back against the idea or seeming nervous. She gives an almost sympathetic kind of smile.]
Certainly. It might be advisable that you stay close to your friend for now. You are weak still.
[And she turns, unafraid of them as she starts down the hall, leading them to a door. She waits for it as the two make their way over.]
Someone who kidnaps two random guys, isolates them in a creepy building, refuses to tell them anything actually useful does not suddenly agree to give them their things without something else on the side.
He doesn't trust this woman.
But what else can he do? If he can just get his hand on his odachi, he can get them out in a flash. So he looks to Peter and nods once before starting to walk to follow. He limps for a step or two until he figures out the best way to hold his weight going forward, walking through the pain instead.
But he leans his head Peter's way, whispering.] I'll be fine. Don't worry about me.
It's hard not to worry, Leo. [He keeps his voice low, openly worried, but trying to corral it given Dr. Reyes is just watching them with a very patient look on her face. He stays close, but not sure what else to do as they walk over.
Once the two are close enough, the woman speaks into something on the door unlocking it. Peter realizes he must have triggered an alarm by breaking the other one on the door to the room they were in.]
Here. This is what I could salvage of your belongings.
[She steps aside to let them actually step into the room if they wish. The room itself looks like a storage space, stacked with a variety of crates lining shelves against a back wall. On a table near the door is a new crate. The familiar sight of Leo's odachi's hilt poking out of it.]
[Voice controlled, damn it. His blood is pulsing loudly in his ears so he couldn't hear what she said either, but it's something to keep in mind, something to try and keep an ear out for later. But as they're allowed into the room, he half-limps in.
And then his eyes fall on that blessed blue hilt. He's reaching for it in a second, no hesitation.]
[Peter tries to not release a relieved sound at Leo grabbing the hilt. Okay, okay, they can leave.
Though the feeling is short-lived when Peter realizes it is just the hilt. The blade is gone completely, broken off leaving only a jagged edge of metal. A surprised sound does escape Peter as he stares at it.]
Unfortunately, there was not much of the blade itself left, but I saved what I could.
[Whatever blood is left in him goes ice cold the minute he lifts the hilt, feeling the weight all wrong. And then he sees the damage.
He wants to scream. He wants to call her a liar to her face, mystic weapons like this don't just break in an explosion. They never have before! He wants to do a lot of things.
But Leonardo does what Leonardo does best.
Shrug up one shoulder as he looks at it.]
Okay. You got us, where are the cameras. Funny joke, but I think we're done here, so let's get the confetti guns out and call it a wrap.
[Doctor Reyes arches a brow back at the teenager.]
I know the shock must be quite a lot to contend with, but I assure you, this is what I found amongst the rubble. If this isn't your weapon, it must still be in New York.
[Peter blows out a breath. Immediately arguing with Reyes.] This- this isn't his weapon. It can't be, it doesn't break!
As I stated, this is what I could find. This is also what is left of your suit. Too much of it was damaged and I took what I could off of you.
[Well, Peter can't help but cringe a little at the confirmation she did change his clothes. Discomfort pools low in his gut. He wraps his arms a little around himself.]
Not that I believe a word you're saying, because I don't, but what exactly are you wanting with us here?
Because stop saying you want us to rest and recover here, you obviously want something from us. Gotta be whatever I guess you took others like us for, if that's even true which, again, I don't believe.
Myself and my employer wish to provide a safe space for troubled mutants still coming into their powers. A chance to grow into themselves and be safe from the outside world. I myself remember being your age, my own powers being out of control enough to hurt others.
[Peter's brows knit together, one thing sticking out fairly immediately.] Your employer?
Mr. Essex acts as a benefactor to help fund this facility. It is in a remote space to be sure of everyone's safety.
[Peter pauses his reach for his costume to look at her.] Where are we?
[Injuries on hold, sword hilt forgotten for the moment. The idea they're in Massachusetts boggles Leon. There's no way, there just is no way, there'snoway.
He keeps the hilt firmly in his grip and steps back toward Peter but he can't help the shaking - either the pain or the shock setting in to the whole situation, he couldn't say.]
[Peter reels back at the reveal they're not even in New York.] Massachusetts?!
[Leo moving back towards him is enough to help Peter shift back to something defensive, gently reaching out to his friend to pull them both back out into the hallway. The fact Leo is shaking just makes Peter more worried.
Dr. Reyes sighs a little, barely having a reaction beyond patience.]
[The barely kept anger Leo's struggling with that's keeping him on his feet even gets a firm direction with that.]
No. You stole us from our home, are lying to us about how we got here and what happened, broke our things if they even really are our things, and keep sidestepping why we can't leave.
[He'll back up into Peter's hand, sticking close by now, taking two seconds to glance at his own bloody footsteps on the floor from where he was standing and backtracked.]
[The woman shakes her head slightly, a clear disappointment crisp in her tone.]
You're both in shock, and the full story would not aid you right at this moment. When you are both calmer, I would be happy to speak with you about everything.
We're leaving. [Peter cringes when he sees the bloody footprints, on the verge of just scooping Leo up again as he pulls him out of the room into the hall.
[It happens quickly enough Peter doesn't have time to react. One moment he's with Leo, the next he's been yanked backward somewhat.
He is encased in a glowing bubble. He slips across its smooth surface, falling onti his backside.
He startles, realizing another one seemingly manifested around Leo as well.
His own bubble is pulled away from Leo's as Reyes begins walking the turtle back the way they came.]
I don't like having to do this, but it is for the best.
Leo! [Peter jolts forward against the forcefield, hitting it hard enough he hurts himself, but the panic about what is happening to his friend is hard to contain.]
[It's the shift in support that has Leo fall. Peter suddenly pulled from him and a smooth surface underneath his feet throws him off, and he goes feet over head with a shout as his leg twinges and a sharp pain in his side stabs clear through any thoughts he was pulling together.
He looks up and around at the bubble surrounding him, then searches for Peter to find his face and starts trying to shoulder his way through the barrier.]
Peter! [Another slam. It's not doing anything but making his shoulder ache like the rest of him. And then he's being walked away.] Let us go!
[Seeing Leo take that level of tumble just makes Peter's panic worse. Peter manages to stick to the surface of the shield, throwing himself at it with as much force as he can muster to break it.]
You can't just do this! Let us go! Now!
You're both more than a little too emotional at the moment for a proper discussion. [Doctor Reyes says smoothly as she walks down the hall.] When you two are calmer, a more thorough discussion can happen.
