But that... He hesitates as he thinks on that one. Don's chirping and trilling was always kind of his thing to figure out. And Korone isn't a sure thing. Leo is fairly certain, but Don isn't.]

Hard to say. [Easier. Go with the easier answer.] There's like nuances, and easy to misinterpret tones and pitch combos.

Working on it. There were a couple of times where he started to sign, so I thought it'd be a good idea to learn.

Oooh, yeah definitely. Especially if you're around when he goes nonverbal, it's helpful to have. I was talking to him about letting me help teach people since he's already trying to teach Hunter and ...someone else, but he got real cagey at the idea of me helping.

… Yeah. I — [ a breath, not quite a sigh, as she tries to arrange her many, many feelings into words ] … I was determined to help then, before I'd had the opportunity to get to know you. [ She'd seen it, she'd known something wasn't adding up, and the first thing she did was metaphorically kick down donnie's door. ] Now that I have that opportunity, I'm even more determined. You're my friend.

[ early days, maybe, but she means every word of it ]

[She can't see it, but she can probably hear the relieved smile on his side of the call.]

Yeah. You're our friend too. We didn't have that many back home, so. For as messed up as this place is, at least it's letting us have that much.

[And giving him some extended time alive, but that's more a him thing than a them thing.]

That's the bright side I've been holding onto, yeah. [ And that's just her — relatively privileged, solidly middle class. Busy father, pigeon problems and rampant PTSD notwithstanding. For the Hamato brothers, it must be so much more. ]

It's like. Yeah, some things are a mess. Yeah, there's a lot to worry about. But we've got this. We've got each other. And, for you guys especially ... getting to do stuff you might not have had the opportunity to before, to make new connections — I can only imagine how much it means to you.

...Yeah. Don and Raph are always wanting to be topside, do stuff, get into human stuff. Mikey too, he likes seeing everything.

So this is good for them, I think. The pain sucks, the scenarios definitely suck, the whole dying constantly is the worst. But for everything we get in exchange, it feels pretty worth it for now.

I know they wanna go back home too though.

Long as my family's happy, I'm fine. Only reason I ever went topside was to go to Hueso's for pizza and when they wanted to do something.
